iSchool Beta Phi Mu Chapter to Reactivate

On February 16, 1974, about twenty members of Beta Phi Mu started Texas' first chapter, becoming charter members of the Beta Eta Chapter at The University of Texas at Austin. They pledged to recognize scholastic achievement and scholarly contributions to library and information science, to sponsor and support appropriate professional and scholarly projects, and to improve the quality of library and information science in the Southwest region of the United States.

Lease Garners Three Early Career Awards in One Year

Assistant Professor Matt Lease has accomplished a rare feat for a young faculty member, securing three prestigious early career awards in one year from federal government agencies. "To receive one career award from a federal funding agency is recognition of early prominence and a strong predictor of future scholarly impact," said Dean Andrew Dillon. "To receive three, all in one year, is unprecedented in my experience.

New Alumni Gift Reaches Out to iSchool Students

Recent iSchool graduate Jarred Wilson and his partner, Mark Steinwachs, made a designated gift to the iSchool, which will have immediate impact on many iSchool students. The funds will provide a professional photographer to produce headshots of any student who wishes to participate. These photographs will be suitable for many purposes, including professional portfolios, social media such as LinkedIn, career portraits, individual web sites, and personal uses such as graduation or sharing with family members.

iSchool Hosts Major National Archiving Conference

The University of Texas at Austin's School of Information (iSchool) will be hosting a major national conference for doctoral students in archival studies and Ph.D.'s who are beginning professional careers in archiving.

The Archival Education and Research Institute (AERI) conference is taking place in Austin from June 17-21 and will draw around 50 archives doctoral candidates and 45 archival educators for five days filled with presentations, workshops and field trips.

iSchool Hosts Entrepreneurial Open House

The School of Information hosted a spring open house to showcase our programs, labs, activities, and facilities to the community. With the help of Entrepreneur-in-Residence Gary Hoover, we welcomed over 200 visitors from Austin and beyond. Held at the iSchool on the first evening of April, the event offered educational and networking opportunities for entrepreneurs and colleagues from Austin's technology community. The open house included tours of the school, the user experience and preservation labs, a reception, and meetings with some of the iSchool faculty and staff.

The School of Information (iSchool) is pleased to announce that international bestselling author and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Sichan Siv will deliver the school's May commencement address.

Born and raised in Cambodia, Siv's incredible journey to success - and what most would term the quintessential American dream - began in 1975 in Phnom Penh, where he was working for the U.S. relief agency CARE. Although the Viet Nam war had ended, the region was far from peaceful - in 1975 Pol Pot's deadly Khmer Rouge entered Cambodia and began a bloody siege.
