iSchool Well-Represented at 2020 ASIS&T Annual Meeting

Several faculty members, PhD students, and a postdoctoral researcher will be representing The University of Texas at Austin School of Information at the 2020 ASIS&T Annual Meeting, which is being held virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from October 22^nd to November 1st. The theme of the conference is Information for a Sustainable World: Addressing Society’s Grand Challenges.

Yan Zhang & Jacek Gwizdka Research Consumer Health Information Search Behavior

Health information has never been as accessible as it is now, thanks to the increasing prevalence of internet-connected devices. “More than 70% of American adults who are on the internet search for health information,” said Dr. Yan Zhang, an Associate Professor who studies consumer online health information-seeking behavior at the University of Texas at Austin School of Information.

Texas iSchool Welcomes New Bill & Lewis Suit Professor of Information Technology

The School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin is pleased to announce that Dr. Ying Ding will be joining the iSchool faculty this fall as the Bill & Lewis Suit Professor of Information Technology.

Currently a Professor of Informatics and Information Science at Indiana University in the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, Ding also serves as Director of Graduate Studies for the Data Science Program at IU.

Dr. Xie boosting older adults' eHealth skills

Associate Professor Bo Xie is working on a project that will help older adults use the Internet to make informed choices about health and medicine.

Dr. Xie received a $426,127 grant from the NIH’s National Institute on Aging for the study, which is titled “Boosting Older Adults’ Cognition by Training Real-World eHealth Skills.”

“Older adults face a range of medical decisions,” Dr. Xie said. “The Internet has the potential to meet their needs for a diverse range of health information.”

Gwizdka, Zhang Earn Grant

UT iSchool Assistant Professors Yan Zhang and Jacek Gwizdka received a $44,444 grant from the UT-Austin in Portugal International collaborator for Emerging Technologies co-lab. The grant will fund their study of interface and content elements that people use to evaluate online health care information. Zhang and Gwizdka are working with their colleague Carla Lopes from the University of Porto in Portugal.

Digital Archive Holds Untold History of African American Mental Health

Resplendent in his trademark sport coat and bow tie, Louis Armstrong plays a trumpet for a large gathering of patients underneath a grove of trees outside of Central State Hospital, the world's first African American psychiatric hospital in Petersburg, Virginia. This is one of the many priceless images stored away in the hospital's filing cabinets that were on the brink of destruction. Due to changes in Virginia's records retention laws, any hospital document over 10 years old had to be destroyed-one hundred years of historic materials lost forever.
