U.S. News & World Report's "2014 Best Graduate Schools" has ranked The University of Texas at Austin's School of Information in the top five nationally among public colleges and schools of library and information science. This is the second time in a row that the school has been placed in the top five.
The school is ranked number six overall nationally, up from eighth when last ranked.
"This ranking represents a historical high for the iSchool," said Andrew Dillon, dean of the School of Information, "and reflects the impact of a decade of hiring and promoting the very best faculty, selectivity in student admissions, and the implementation of a flexible and forward-looking curriculum that ensures our graduates are highly sought after across the information professions."
The School of Information has remained in the top 10 in the U.S. News rankings for the past 15 years, steadily rising through this elite upper tier.
Using quantitative and qualitative measures, U.S. News annually ranks graduate school programs in business, education, engineering and law. Select other Ph.D. programs and specialty programs, such as those in the School of Information, are ranked in alternate years based on ratings of academic experts.
In addition to receiving an overall ranking, the School of Information also had four specialty programs that were highly ranked:
- LAW LIBRARIANSHIP is #2
- ARCHIVES AND PRESERVATION is #4
- DIGITAL LIBRARIANSHIP is #9 (a leap of four spots since the last rankings)
- INFORMATION SYSTEMS is #11
The School of Information is one of only three colleges or schools at the University of Texas at Austin to be ranked in the top 10 this year.
