About the Work

I am a children’s librarian at the Lago Vista Public Library! Lago Vista is expanding, and the library has become a community hub. In addition to overseeing the children’s program, I do collection development for our children’s, juniors, and YA sections, maintain our website and social media, help organize some adult programming, make our monthly newsletter for patrons, and am responsible for all of our book repairs. I love that the community feels close knit and supportive of each other, and that I am learning so many aspects of librarianship. I know my work directly aids members of the community with access to literacy and resources, as well as serving as a place for people to share their time and ideas. In our current political climate, free and accessible community spaces that offer resources like ours are instrumental, especially in small town environments where those resources are not as accessible as in larger cities.

How the iSchool Prepared Them

My lab classes with Sarah Norris and Rebecca Elder were a tremendous help, as smaller libraries do not always have someone knowledgeable in things like book repairs, and that’s come very much in handy at my library. I also think Dr. Roy’s Public Libraries class did an excellent job of helping prepare me for the foundations of librarianship. My field experience was done in school libraries, and the gave me a great idea of the day to day responsibilities I would be dealing with in any library environment.

A Memorable iSchool Experience

All of the friends I made! I still regularly hang out with my whole group of iSchool friends, even as we’ve all started our jobs (some in different cities).

Advice for Current Students

Take a wide variety of classes in all disciplines, and never forget that your work is ultimately about helping people. I think that can sometimes be forgotten in the intense focus on theory in a graduate school environment.
