About the Work

As a Senior Data Scientist within the Sparky conversational AI initiative, I focus on the intersection of natural language processing and retail intelligence. What I find most rewarding is the blank-canvas nature of the role. Because we are operating at the frontier of large language models, there is no established playbook. Every day involves brainstorming new architectures and solving problems that did not exist a few years ago.

By designing a conversational interface for online shopping, I am helping shift the digital retail experience for millions of users. It is not just about convenience. It is also about accessibility and creating an experience that understands intent rather than keywords, making the platform more inclusive for people with different needs and levels of technical proficiency.

I view my work as a real-world laboratory for Information Science. We are taking concepts such as semantic search, cognitive load management, and reinforcement learning and applying them in a large, high-stakes production environment. My role sits between academic AI research and consumer-facing software engineering.

How the iSchool Prepared Them

Courses in Ethics of AI, Presenting Information, Linear Models, and Data Mining helped prepare Somnath for his current work. Together, they supported both the technical and human-centered sides of building AI systems that can function well in complex, real-world settings.

Advice for Current Students

Step outside your comfort zone. The iSchool’s policy of allowing credits outside the department is a major opportunity. In fields like data science and AI, you rarely work in a vacuum. Use those courses to build technical depth, strategic context, and a niche that connects information science with real-world application.
