The talk will focus on a new project on the decolonization of digital cultures and information. This involves an examination of digital technologies, information and everyday life in Mexico. Based on an ethnographic pilot study focused on the lived experiences of different people using WhatsApp in Mexico, I discuss the app in terms of its role as a critical infrastructure for an attention economy and affective information. Misinformation spread via social media platforms has emerged as a prominent societal challenge. The production and spread of misinformation on these platforms have evolved from a largely bot-driven operation to one that exploits everyday actions of end users. Purely computational approaches that work reasonably well for bots can be ineffective for combating such organic spread. (Click for more information)
