SASI invites all iSchool students to an interactive workshop on Tuesday, March 9 at 5:30pm CST to engage in a conversation about mental health and how it relates to us as scholars, professionals, and persons. There will be panelists ranging from MSIS students, PhD candidates, and first-years, as well as representatives from CMHC and SHIFT. This will be an opportunity to share, build community, and learn from each other.

This research presentation will present a long-term and large-scale action research study into the nature of librarianship. It will break down the practice-based shift of librarianship from collections and institutions to services and true community engagement, guided by theories of knowledge and social action. Latina immigrants to the U.S. Midwest have specific needs from their information and communication technologies. Looking at this population in the context of traditional digital divide studies suggests that they are “on the wrong side” of that divide, but also suggests that our concept of the digital divide is limiting and may not be adapted to the variety of needs of multiple communities. My research seeks to center the margins by exploring how technology impacts marginalized populations’ information work, specifically emerging adults experiencing homelessness. I employ a range of qualitative approaches to examine how marginalized individuals search for, process, and use information in both online and offline spaces. (Click for more information)
