The Honors Programs in Informatics provides ambitious and focused students with an opportunity to do independent research in the form of a substantial thesis: students will research, read, and develop an honors thesis subject and proposal for one semester; then in the second semester the student will write and defend a final honors thesis.
Application Process
All applications are conditional upon the student finding an appropriate faculty thesis supervisor who is in Informatics program. The approval and signature of this thesis supervisor is required on this application form. The thesis supervisor must be a faculty member (rank of tenured, tenure-track, or senior lecturer with a PhD) affiliated with the Undergraduate Program. The supervisor’s academic interests should be compatible with the scope of the proposed thesis so that they may be able to direct the project. The second reader may be any standing faculty at The University of Texas at Austin whose research interests relate to the student’s thesis topic. The selection of the second reader should be made in consultation with the thesis supervisor.
Deadlines: After consultation with your faculty supervisor, students should apply to the Honors Program during their junior year in the Fall semester by November 30 for the Spring-Fall Honors Thesis sequence and Spring semester by April 30 for the Fall-Spring Honors Thesis sequence. The Fall-Spring sequence is recommended.
Requirements for BSI/BA in Informatics with Honors (30 hours)
- Grade point average minimum of 3.5 across all Informatics coursework
- Replace Capstone with Honors Thesis in Informatics (6) hours – I 679 HA & I 670 HB
- Additional open elective (3 hours)
