Students Shine at Spring 2014 iSchool Open House

June 11, 2014

Teaching librarians to play psychologist. Mapping flood risk areas. Digitizing a goldmine of Texas music recordings.

These were just a few of the student projects featured at the iSchool's Open House on May 2.

iSchool Student Profile: Katie Thomas

May 26, 2014

When Katie Thomas arrived for library volunteer orientation at Casis Elementary School four years ago, she struck veteran librarian Barbara Nichols as quiet and unassuming.

Nichols remembers mentioning - almost as an afterthought - that she could use some help with the Halloween display case. And suddenly, this unassuming volunteer unleashed a creative force that Nichols said transformed the library. It didn't end with Halloween. Thomas kept delivering - creating robots with the students for one author' visit; a circus theme for another.

iSchool Careers: Speed Interviewing

April 1, 2014

When Stefanie Roberts froze up on the first question of the Speed Interviewing event in February, the irony wasn't lost on her.

The question? "What makes you an effective communicator, and what can you do to improve your communication?"

Roberts, who started at the iSchool in January, recovered, gave her answer and, more importantly, received constructive feedback. Then, feeling more poised, she moved on to another table where a different interviewer threw another question at her. Within an hour, she had fielded 12 questions from 12 different people.

New Alumni Gift Reaches Out to iSchool Students

Aug. 19, 2013

Recent iSchool graduate Jarred Wilson and his partner, Mark Steinwachs, made a designated gift to the iSchool, which will have immediate impact on many iSchool students. The funds will provide a professional photographer to produce headshots of any student who wishes to participate. These photographs will be suitable for many purposes, including professional portfolios, social media such as LinkedIn, career portraits, individual web sites, and personal uses such as graduation or sharing with family members.

iSchool Hosts Entrepreneurial Open House

June 13, 2013

The School of Information hosted a spring open house to showcase our programs, labs, activities, and facilities to the community. With the help of Entrepreneur-in-Residence Gary Hoover, we welcomed over 200 visitors from Austin and beyond. Held at the iSchool on the first evening of April, the event offered educational and networking opportunities for entrepreneurs and colleagues from Austin's technology community. The open house included tours of the school, the user experience and preservation labs, a reception, and meetings with some of the iSchool faculty and staff.

2014 Spring Convocation Wrap-up

The merriment began before the ceremony started as iSchool graduates assembled in the hallway outside the amphitheater at the AT&T Conference Center on May 17.

The order of the procession would be alphabetical, one of the organizers announced.

"We have to alphabetize ourselves?" a student responded with mock incredulity.

Amid peals of laughter and the strains of the bagpipe - a convocation tradition upheld for many years by piper Wade Harper - graduates made last minute adjustments to each other's stoles and tassels. It was time.
