Introduction to tools and methods, software and hardware, to produce physical information displays.
Prerequisites
Graduate standing.
Restrictions
Restricted to graduate students in the School of Information through registration periods 1 and 2. Outside students will be permitted to join our waitlists beginning with registration period 3.
Notes
Contemporary professionals (designers, artists, architects, or engineers) require the use of technology for the creation of prototypes, the expression of design ideas, or the visualisation of information, among others. In this course, students will deep dive in the exploration of one or more technologies, whether software or hardware. Students will get introduced to different techniques and tools through lectures, workshops and seminars. They will work in formulating a group project based on the learning goals and work towards the production of an exhibition piece and a short reflection in action document. In particular, students will leard about programming user interfaces in Java / JavaScript and basic electronics with embedded open source prototyping platforms. Furthermore, students will learn how to get physical artifacts to exchange data with the user interface in the computer.
