The mission of the Career Development Office is to facilitate the professional development of iSchool students through information, inspiration, encouragement, and connection. We provide education on the vast array of career paths in the field of information, individualized counseling sessions, and connections with resources, people, and career opportunities.
Career Consultation
You should schedule a session to meet with the Career Development team at least once during your first semester. Ideally you will meet prior to registering for your next semester. You can schedule this appointment online via Handshake or by emailing careers@ischool.utexas.edu. This initial session is an important opportunity to discuss career goals to help inform your progress through the program and link you with the right resources to ensure success.
Ph.D. students are also welcome to set up appointments, though are not required to do so.
Careers Newsletter
All incoming students will be automatically registered to receive email newsletters from the iSchool’s Career Development Office (msis-career or docis-career lists). You will have the ability to unsubscribe.
Is your e-mail on file? You should have already received some emails from Carla Criner, the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. If you received those messages you can disregard this warning.
If you elected for your contact information to be kept confidential by the University or the Graduate School and not listed in the UT Directory, your email might not be on the official student list that the iSchool maintains. This may result in missing important emails from the iSchool. If you are not receiving emails, make sure that the Graduate Program Administrator has your email on file. You may also need to manually add yourself to pertinent listservs like "msis-career" or "the-insider" by visiting UT Lists.
Handshake
On the HireUTexas powered by Handshake platform, you can search for jobs, internships, capstones, and experiential opportunities. Students can also connect with employers and alumni, RSVP for events and find all of the Career Office resources. The university has already preloaded your profile and you can access it at any time by logging in with your EID credentials. If you have any trouble logging in with your EID, please email hireutexas@austin.utexas.edu for assistance.
