Uncovering the Past, Exploring the Future: An Analysis of Bio-Archives

Abstract

Heritage science is a discipline that combines scientific research with cultural heritage studies. "Bio-archives", a term coined by the Folger Shakespeare Library's Michael Witmore, is a narrower study within this field that focuses on archival collections and the information held within their physical forms, such as DNA samples and the chemical compounds of ink. This project surveys current methods of practice to illustrate ways in which researchers can use modern technology to uncover further information about the history of artifacts. By revealing new information, bio-archives stress the continued importance of archives and the physical objects they house.
