The Effect of Censorship on Collection Development on School Libraries

Abstract

Parents and educators sometimes feel the need to censor children's books from school and public libraries - if the book in question contains material they feel is unsuitable for their children to read. Objectionable material can include but is not limited to graphic violence, language, LGBTQ themes, drug use and sexual content. By asking the librarians to remove these books from the shelves, parents exert control over the library collection. This paper will review past publications related to censorship of children's books in public and school libraries. By reviewing past work, the authors hope to justify why librarians must monitor their own shelves and remove books as part of collection management
