Biography

For the past four years, Ms. Murphy has been working as an independent consultant for museums and libraries, surveying collections and assisting in the development of comprehensive preservation plans. In addition, she advises preservation and conservation divisions, as well as institutions on vision, positioning, and fund-raising activities.

From 2003-05, she led a team of conservators at the Library of Congress to oversee the preservation and stabilization of audiovisual and paper-based archives for a move to a newly constructed conservation facility. She also has ten years experience working in conservation and twelve years in development and as Associate Director of the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

Ms. Murphy interned in the conservation of paper and paintings at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She was Senior Conservator for three years at the Ransom Center, where she carried out research in paper fiber identification and served on the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) Preservation Standards Committee, to establish standards for Exhibition of Library and Archival Material.

Ms. Murphy is a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation. She has been a member of the AIC's Book and Paper Group for over 20 years, and is presently serving as Chair.
