The mission of the Career Development Office is to facilitate the professional development of iSchool students through information, inspiration, encouragement, and connection. We provide education on the vast array of career paths in the field of information, individualized counseling sessions, and connections with resources, people, and career opportunities.

Career Consultation - required individual orientation

You should schedule a session to meet with the Career Development Director at least once during your 1st semester. Ideally you will meet prior to registering for your next semester. You can schedule this appointment at your convenience by calling 512-471-8806 or stop by our coordinator’s office in 5.336. This initial session is an important opportunity to discuss career goals to help inform your progress through the program and link you with the right resources to ensure success.

Participation in the Career Services Orientation is required of all incoming (new) master’s students. Students who do not schedule a consultation or attend the career orientation may be restricted in accessing iCareers, the iSchools’ career services management tool.

Ph.D. students are also welcome to set up appointments, though are not required to do so.

Careers Newsletter

All incoming students will be automatically registered to receive email newsletters from the iSchool’s Career Development Office (msis-career or docis-career lists). You will have the ability to unsubscribe.

Is your e-mail on file?  You should have already received some emails from Carla Criner, the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.  If you received those messages you can disregard this warning.

If you elected for your contact information to be kept confidential by the University or the Graduate School and not listed in the UT Directory, your email might not be on the official student list that the iSchool maintains. This may result in missing important e-mails from the iSchool. If you are not receiving emails, make sure that the iSchool Graduate Coordinator, Carol Carreon, has your email on file. You may also need to manually add yourself to pertinent listservs like "msis-career" or "the-insider" by visiting UT Lists.

iCareers Career Management System

You will be given access to the iCareers system before you register. You will receive a separate email with information about how to access your account so you can search our exclusive job board and career resource library available only to our students and alumni.

If you do not receive this email, please check your spam/junk folder for a message with the subject line "Welcome to iCareers - UT School of Information Job & Internship Board"

You need that email to log into the iCareers Student Portal (
