Fall 2020 at the iSchool

Welcome back to a new semester! The university and the iSchool have worked tirelessly this summer to plan and prepare a safer environment for learning, teaching and research to resume on campus and online. Here are a few reminders of what to expect.

Reduced Population Density and Shortened Time on Campus

Some students, faculty and staff will remain at home and learn and work online in the fall. The fall 2020 semester will start August 26. In-person instruction will end November 24, two days before Thanksgiving. Students will attend classes remotely for the remainder of the semester. View the Academic Calendar for Long Session 2020-2021 for additional information.

Protecting Yourself and Others When You Return to Campus

Please visit the Protect Texas Together website regularly to review the latest announcements and information for students, faculty, and staff.

If you do come to campus for class or any other reason, you must:

  • Wear a protective face mask indoors.
  • Screen for COVID-19 symptoms. The university recommends that you participate in daily symptom screening using the Protect Texas Together app or review symptoms at the University Health Services or UT Health Austin websites.
  • Wash your hands well and often. There will be hand sanitizer available at every entrance to UTA as well as in classrooms and Tocker Lounge. Masks, hand sanitizer, and sanitizing wipes will be available in classrooms. Students are encouraged to clean their desk and chair with sanitizing wipes before class begins. There are also masks and hand sanitizer available for sale in the vending machines. Please bring a reusable water bottle to campus and use the touch-free bottle filler to refill it. The regular water fountains have been covered and should not be used.
  • Keep six feet (two meters) of distance between yourself and others whenever possible. The furniture in classrooms, hallways and Tocker Lounge has been moved to establish social distancing. We ask that you do not move them. The restrooms are limited to 3 people at a time. If there are more than 3 people in the restroom, please wait outside until someone leaves. The elevators are limited to 2 people at a time and signs have been posted on the stairwells designating them for up or down traffic only. Stairway 2 is designated as up only, and Stairway 1 is designated as down only. Students should take these stairs to the 3rd floor classroom, 3.404, if possible.

Please note that both the IT Lab and the kitchen in Tocker Lounge will be closed for the fall semester and there will be no student access to the fifth floor. Classrooms 1.504 and 1.204 will not be used for instruction this semester, but they will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for socially distanced meetings for when a student must meet in person with a faculty or staff member. Students may also use these rooms as a quiet place to study or attend an online course as long as the maximum occupancy of four people at a time is observed.

It is of the utmost importance that every member of our community follows the institution’s Health and Safety Requirements. Potential health and safety violations should be reported to the Office of the Dean of Students for investigation and disciplinary action if necessary.

Thank you all for the part you will play in keeping our community safe while continuing your education and making progress toward your degrees.
