A survey course in the evaluation, selection, and proper and creative use of books and other media with children. Forms and content of literature for children. Extensive reading of children's books. Intended to help the student develop a frame of reference for working with children's materials. [May not be applied toward the M.L.I.S. without the written consent of the Graduate Adviser.] (Upper-division standing)

This is primarily a survey course in the evaluation, selection, and proper and creative use of media with children. The characteristics, psychological and developmental needs, interests, and curricular as well as leisure concerns of children from birth through sixth grade are considered as they relate to their use of media. Extensive reading of children's books, sampling of children's audio-visual media, and a general awareness and appreciation of the variety and opportunities for enjoyment of children's media in our community will be emphasized. The lecture method will be the primary method of teaching which will be employed, with many opportunities for viewing films and other audio-visual media, and for class discussion of many topics in children's literature.
